Saw Cuts in Concrete: When, Where and How Deep
Concrete shrinks as it cures. If you don't give it a place to crack, it will find its own β usually right through the middle of your nice new slab in a jagged, unsightly line. Saw cuts (also called control joints or contraction joints) are deliberate cuts that create weak planes, forcing the concrete to crack neatly along the cut line where it's barely visible. Getting the depth, spacing and timing right is critical.
Why saw cuts are necessary
As concrete hydrates and dries, it shrinks β typically 0.5β0.8 mm per metre over the first few months. This shrinkage creates internal tensile stresses. Since concrete is weak in tension (roughly 10β15% of its compressive strength), these stresses cause random cracking unless control joints are present.
A saw cut reduces the slab's cross-sectional thickness at that point by about 25%, creating a weak plane. When shrinkage stress builds up, the concrete cracks at the cut β a straight, controlled line β rather than randomly across the surface. The cut is later filled with a flexible joint sealant to prevent water ingress.
How deep should saw cuts be?
The standard rule is:

Cutting too shallow won't create enough of a weak plane β the concrete may still crack randomly. Cutting too deep weakens the slab structurally and wastes blade life. For most residential slabs (100 mm thick), a 25 mm cut is the target.
How far apart should saw cuts be spaced?
The spacing rule of thumb is:
Joint spacing = 24 to 36 Γ slab thickness
For common slab thicknesses:

Several factors push you toward the lower end of the range:
- High-shrinkage mixes β mixes with high cement content or shrinkage-prone aggregates need closer spacing.
- Hot, dry conditions β rapid drying increases shrinkage stress.
- Thinner slabs β the 24Γ end of the range is safer for 100 mm slabs.
- Large temperature swings β thermal expansion and contraction add to shrinkage stress.
Additionally, the aspect ratio matters. The longest panel dimension should not exceed 1.5Γ the shortest dimension. Square panels are ideal β long, narrow panels are more likely to crack.
When to cut: timing is everything
The window for saw cutting is narrow. Cut too early and the concrete is still green β the edges of the cut will ravel and spall. Cut too late and the concrete may have already cracked randomly.

The best test: drag a nail or screwdriver across the surface. If it scratches without dislodging aggregate, the slab is ready to cut. If the surface tears or ravels, wait another hour or two.
Saw cut patterns
The pattern should divide the slab into roughly square panels. Common patterns include:
- Grid pattern β parallel cuts in both directions, creating rectangular or square panels. Most common for driveways and large slabs.
- Continuous lines β cuts running the full length or width of the slab, aligned with construction joints where possible.
- Joints at re-entrant corners β any internal corner (e.g., where a slab narrows around a column) is a stress concentror. Place a cut line from the corner inward.
Avoid T-intersections in cut lines β they create a stress point at the junction. Stagger the cuts or use a continuous line instead.
Common saw cutting mistakes
- Cutting too late β the #1 error. By the time you cut, the concrete has already cracked.
- Spacing cuts too far apart β exceeding 36Γ the thickness dramatically increases the chance of random cracking between joints.
- Forgetting re-entrant corners β L-shaped slabs or slabs with notches need a cut line from every internal corner.
- Not sealing the joints β unsealed cuts allow water and debris ingress, which can cause sub-base erosion and spalling.
- Using the wrong blade β green concrete needs a soft-bond blade; cured concrete needs a hard-bond blade. Using the wrong one wastes blades and produces poor cuts.
